Okay everyone, here it is. Last Thursday Kanye West debuted his collection entitled ‘Yeezy: Season 1’ at New York Fashion Week. If you asked him, he would say it broke the grounds of creativity and started a new era in fashion. Critics are saying it’s nothing that new. Nonetheless, I think it was still pretty amazing.
Kanye definitely isn’t new to the fashion game; he’s had collaborations with Nike and Giuseppe Zanotti, as well as his own fashion line. After he dropped ties with Nike, he’s been working towards this kickass collection with Adidas.
It definitely wasn’t your average NYFW ready-to-wear collection. The show featured pieces from the line worn with nude body stockings to accentuate the looks. Common throughout many of the looks were nude head stockings, woollen crops and the Yeezy 750 Boost sneakers. The colour palette was fairly neutral with accents of military greens to match the military style of many of the pieces.
The models had minimal makeup, to emphasize both the pieces they wore as well the models themselves. The cast varied greatly in weight, height, race and level of stardom. Models included not Kendall, but Kylie Jenner, and Instagram star Luka Sabbat.
West said the collection was inspired by the London riots of 2011, and the relationship between fashion and aspiration. During the riots, many stores were looted, especially clothing stores. West recalled how when he was younger ‘Kids got killed for [Nike Air] Jordans’, and that the same desperate desire for fashion exists now. Adidas describes the collection as ”a study in contrasts like street-luxury and vintage-new, the clothing shapes a new modern wardrobe.”
Despite not being invited to sit front row with Alexander Wang, Rihanna, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Anna Wintour and Kim Kardashian, you can still watch the show from the comfort of your inferior home on Youtube . You can hear North West cry as the show opens. Did Kanye mean for that to happen because it’s super arty? Who knows. It’s not your average NYFW runway either. The models stand in military-like formation, staring ahead as if detached from where they are. Strange one note trumpet music as well. Sit with it.
The show finished with Kanye debuting the first track of his upcoming album ‘Wolves’. I have to say I’m a bit more excited for the album than the collection, mostly because I’ll actually be able to afford it. Check out some images from the show.
