Meryl Streep is undoubtedly one of the Queens of the film industry, with an undeniable Midas touch. And the first trailer for her new movie Ricki and the Flash looks no different, with Streep clad in braids and black leather, channeling her inner Stevie Nicks as rock ‘n’ roll goddess Ricki Rendazzo.
The 65-year-old is certainly no stranger to belting out some tunes, having given us memorable performances in Postcards from the Edge, Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods. This film shows us all she’s still got it, covering 12 songs ranging from Springsteen to Gaga all while rocking out on her electric guitar. Streep looks to have put blood, sweat and tears into the transition – and of course, we mean literal blood.
The trailer depicts Streep as a rock musician who faces the music by returning home to reconcile with her family after finding out daughter Julie (played by real-life daughter Mamie Gummer) is dealing with the aftermath of a broken engagement. She also has to deal with her ex-hubby Pete (Kevin Kline) and his new wife, and well as son
Bucky Barnes Joshua (Sebastian Stan) who bring with them even more obstacles for Streep to overcome on her road to redemption.
“I was never a traditional mom, but I am a musician, and I’d like to give all I have to you,” Ricki says, giving the audience a glimpse into her convoluted vagabond life, as well as renewed passion to mend the mistakes she made on the road to fame. The film looks to be full of epic live recordings, undeniable chemistry between the mother-daughter duo and an overwhelming sense of authenticity that packs an emotional punch (pretty much Streep’s trademark).
Ricki and the Flash is directed by Academy Award winning Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) and scripted by fellow Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (Juno). All things considered, this looks to be the recipe for a successful and memorable film (I can smell the nominations from here!)
Check out the rocking trailer for yourself, and catch the film when it hits cinemas on the 13th of August!
