Cap is back! Brace yourselves for the first full trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is adjusting to life in modern-day Washington, D.C. when a sudden attack on S.H.I.E.L.D. pulls him into a global conspiracy. Locking horns with his superior officer Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and targeted by assassins, Cap teams up with new ally Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to take on a mysterious new enemy, the Winter Soldier.
Of course, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is in the mix again with an obligatory new hairdo, along with Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Cap’s old flame Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). And to cap it all off, American icon Robert Redford joins the Marvel family as senior S.H.I.E.L.D. officer Alexander Pierce.
With the introduction of ambiguous authority, a villain shrouded in secrecy, and S.H.I.E.L.D. embracing its military might, I’m getting strong hints of Star Trek: Into Darkness – not to mention the helicarrier crashing nose-first into a river. U.S.S. Vengeance, anybody?
Comparisons aside, The Winter Soldier is looking damn good. Where Captain America: The First Avenger was unashamedly old-fashioned and gung-ho, this new instalment appears to be steering the Captain into darker waters, touching on pre-emptive strikes and moral accountability. But more to the point, it looks like there’s some slam-dunk action on the way that will rival even The Avengers.
April 4, 2014 can’t get here soon enough.
