Might the second installment in the rebooted Spider-Man franchise actually deserve the ‘Amazing’ in its title? The first teaser trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is here, and it’s pretty goddamn spectacular – even if it is 80% CGI and brooding stares.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) attempting to balance his personal life with his crime-fighting responsibilities. But he’s about to face his greatest challenge yet, in the form of three (and quite possibly more) powerful foes. Jamie Foxx ups the voltage as Electro, a former Spidey fan turned electricity-wielding psychopath.
He’s joined by Paul Giamatti as The Rhino – a hardened criminal who suits up in a powerful exoskeleton to tear New York apart. Rounding out the antagonist group is Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan), Peter’s old friend who’s shaping up to be the new Green Goblin.
On top of that villainous smorgasbord there’s a dash of awkward romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), requisite poignancy from Aunt May (Sally Field) and a raspy debut from Norman Osborne (Chris Cooper). Keep a sharp eye and you’ll notice potential references to The Vulture and Doctor Octopus, in keeping with the theory that the Sinister Six are on their way.
Talk about overstuffed. Spider-Man 3 infamously tried to cram in too many characters and plot lines, so this time around the filmmakers logically decided to…uh…include even more. If you’re wondering how director Marc Webb is going to juggle all of this, you’re not alone. If he manages to pull it off, let him forever be known as Spider Webb.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
