Apparently 2015 is the year of the shakeup, because today’s Golden Globes red carpet was a pleasant change from previous years, but great as usual. Before I get stuck into my top picks for fashion, let’s look at the ceremony highlights.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, presenting the ‘72nd and final’ Golden Globes: amazing. I pre-gamed by watching their previous years opening monologues a couple of days ago, and had quite a few laffs watching this years. It got a tiiiiny bit iffy around the North Korea part, but man those ladies have got some wit. Honourable mention to their usual dig at Clooney; they mentioned just a few of Amal Clooney’s admirable achievements in her career as a human rights lawyer, followed by ‘so tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award’. #truth
Speaking of, George Clooney’s acceptance speech for his award was great; true, humble, and topical #jesuischarlie. I am at peace that J.K Simmons won best supporting for Whiplash, if you’ve seen it you’ll know why. Very refreshing not to see the cast of Modern Family winning again, nor Big Bang theory; it was about time we honour some of the other equally if not better comedies. Birdman, which I have not seen but have heard is a masterpiece, got the awards it deserved, as did the equally masterful Boyhood (which I have seen and adored).
Anyway, now for the important stuff. As I said, quite a shakeup. I was pleased not to have to mention Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, or Sofia Vergara in a mermaid gown. Here’s the best from the carpet.
I will always acknowledge a lady boss who wears pants on a red carpet, but obviously Emma Watson gave her the strength to do it. Emma Stone in Lanvin
Matthew McConaughey had a weird fluffy beard going on, probably for the next amazing movie he’s doing, so tonight lets just acknowledge his stunning wife Camila Alves in Monique Lhuillier
She was the 2014 Queen of the Red Carpet, and it’s looking like she’s going to keep the crown. This is my favourite; Lupita Nyong’o in Giambattista Valli Couture
She’s got a toe in basic territory, but a simple dress like this always gets on the best dressed. Reese Witherspoon looks great in this perfectly fitted Calvin Klein
I’m a huge fan of Valentino, and desperately want this amazing gown worn by Claire Danes. It also looks really comfortable, am I right?
I expect this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think this Chanel is kind of stunning. Doesn’t hurt it’s being worn by the amazing Keira Knightley.
If you’re going to wear a red dress on the red carpet, ask Taylor Schilling how to do it, she’ll tell you to wear Salvatore Ferragamo like her.
This Michael Kors is heavenly and greek goddess-esque, paired with turquoise Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. Golden Globe nominee Emily Blunt got it very right.
She always always looks really really pretty. I don’t know how; Mrs Legend aka Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad.
Forget what I said before; coming in equal first place has to be Sienna Miller in this ridiculous Miu Miu. Perfect perfect perfect.
