Sober, one of the standout hits off Childish Gambino’s latest EP KAUAI, has been given the visual treatment and once again leaves me questioning how this man can do no wrong??
The video, which is directed by Hiro Murai, the film-making genius who has previously worked alongside Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt and Chet Faker recently on the track Gold, is as bizarre as you could imagine. Set in an empty take-out restaurant, similar to the one used in his video for Sweatpants, Gambino attempts to capture the attention of a cute girl that has caught his eye from across the room, through some pretty bizarre (but kinda cool) interpretive dance moves.
The girl, who seems rather disinterested in what Gambino has on offer, acknowledges him after he reveals to her that he is indeed high, joins him in dance momentarily before proceeding over to the counter to collect her order and then leaves.
Oddly enough, the video begins and ends with Gambino seated in the same position, with the clock staying in the same spot throughout his attempt to woo the girl. It almost seems that the exchange with the girl was all played out in his mind and is the work of his imagination, symbolising the mentality of a typical teenage male who lacks the confidence and reluctancy to approach someone they admire.
