Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has today released the first track from his new four-track EP titled ‘Aerial Love’ – and it seems the musician has done a complete 180 turn, channeling the likes of Frank Ocean and James Blake to produce this soulful and sexy track.
This song is the result of a collaboration with Joel Little, who is best known for working with other big names like Lorde and Broods. And although this change in sound is one bound to be popular among music listeners across the nation, many will be surprised (and maybe a tad disappointed?) that they aren’t hearing anything remotely like his earlier work with the band – this track substituting rock and heavy guitar for a slower beat and breathy vocals, paired with minimal instruments and a harmonious falsetto as he sings: We got this aerial love / At the end of the day / we’ll take flight.
This track is a taste of his first solo album set to be released later this year, and is also due to get a music video directed by Lorin Askill, who has previously worked with Flume, Sia and 2014 Hottest 100 winner Chet Faker - and perhaps this is the past hit-maker’s way of staying relevant in today’s music industry.
Well, it seems we wont know for sure until we hear the rest of the EP set to drop on the 13th of March, but in the meantime, listen to the song and decide whether you think it deserves a little viral love!
