Pharrell‘s shorts and THAT selfie aside, The 86th Oscars should be commended for its stellar music-from-a-motion-picture performances. Among them were Pharrell’s gaudy rendition of Happy (Despicable Me), U2‘s Ordinary Love (Mandela) and Idina Menzel‘s Let It Go (Frozen).
Perhaps the most underrated performance was Karen O and Ezra Koenig‘s The Moon Song, from Spike Jonze‘s Her. The Oscar-nominated track was composed by O and lyricized by Jonze, and is sung by lead actors Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson in the film.
Sitting barefoot with Koenig beneath a looming moon, Karen O sings in a voice that is gentle yet completely spellbinding. Koenig accompanies her with guitar and backing vocals, and, quite marvellously, socks that match her red dress.
The whole thing plays like a dream, and as such, you experience quite the rude awakening when it ends after a mere minute and a half.
