Sydney’s twenty-one year old bass producer Sebastian Muecke, famously known as Basenji has been extremely busy this year having signed with the label Future Classic. Gearing up to play at Beyond The Valley this coming New Years, Basenji was able to spare several minutes during his breakfast pres to have a chat with XXIV. Of course, the first thing I wanted to know, was the influence behind his name…
“I’ve been talking to people about this and I’ve decided I should come up with something more interesting. I just really liked the word so I went with it. I only met a Basenji for the first time a few weeks after choosing the name; I had never seen one before”.
Basenji has already clocked up countless plays on Triple J and for the young Sydney lad, music is not just a hobby anymore. – “For me, I wanted to start working on music straight after I had finished university and that’s what I did and that’s when I had time to do it properly. I’ve been working on my music for a long time and I’ve always been interested in it. Before this, music was just a hobby thing; it was on the side but now I’m working that much harder to make it all happen and I’m taking it seriously now that I have the time”.
Having always been a creative individual Basenji crafted a unique sound that differed to many of the tracks flooding our airwaves. After he loaded two of his tracks onto the Triple J Unearthed website (and thank god he did!) there was an understandably massive response - “Dawn got a lot of attention and around that time was when I got picked up by my manager and he basically pulled all the strings, having had a close relationship with Future Classic”.
Not only are we excited about the lineup for the Beyond The Valley festival, so is Basenji. Having played at Splendour In The Grass Festival this year, he imagines BTV would be somewhat similar and has confirmed to be playing some new tunes for the festivalgoers.– “I’ll definitely be playing some new music, that’s what I’ve been working towards, and towards a six track EP. Four new tunes will be released, I’m hoping at the start of next year!”
Having witnessed the very talented Basenji perform live at Adelaide’s Rocket Bar just last month on his Heirloom Tour, I urge you to check out this fast riser. Playing a couple of BTV sideshows and performing at Sydney’s very own Luna Park on New Years, Basenji is one to keep an eye out for!
