If the teaser was all about star power, this new trailer for American Hustle offers some hints about the plot of David O. Russell’s highly anticipated crime-comedy.
Based on the FBI’s real-life Abscam operation, American Hustle follows husband and wife con-artists Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), who are pressured into working for FBI agent Ritchie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper.)
Jeremy Renner is also in the mix, along with the unstoppable Jennifer Lawrence (seriously Jen, could you be any more amazing?) If you didn’t blink at 2:04, you might recognise the venerable Robert DeNiro, reteaming with Russell after an Oscar-nominated turn in Silver Linings Playbook.
And, as you may have noticed, American Hustle also stars some of the most atrocious hairdos yet seen on the silver screen. Even for a film set in the 1970s, I’m having trouble deciding who’s got it worst – Bale’s seedy combover, Cooper’s greasy curls or Renner’s monument to hairspray.
Russell seems to be hitting his stride, after the hiccup that was I Heart Huckabees. In 2010, Russell bounced back to form with The Fighter, and since then he’s moved fast. He delivered the acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook in 2011, and American Hustle is set for a December release this year. With back-to-back critical victories, the director has raised the bar pretty high for himself. But if this trailer is anything to go by, Russell’s Hustle looks to be in fine form.
American Hustle arrives on U.S. screens as of December 13, 2013.
