JJ Abrams is keeping a tight lid on Star Wars: Episode VII’s pre-production, but at last there’s a new hope for information-starved fans: the magnificent Gary Oldman has officially been contacted about joining the space saga.
They’ve called … I’m more cynical about it now. I’ll believe it when I’m on the plane home. The deal isn’t done. But yeah, they’ve inquired.
It’s not much, but it’s the most solid information on new cast members so far. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are expected to reprise their classic roles, but so far R2-D2 is the only character guaranteed to be in it.
The rumour mill has been churning out names since the film was announced, with popular guesses being Michael Fassbender, Saoirse Ronan, Michael B. Jordan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugo Weaving, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and even Zac Efron.
At least Oldman confirmed he’s actually on the shortlist. No stranger to science fiction or blockbuster franchises, he would be a fantastic choice – his chameleon-like ability to embody wildly different roles is almost without equal. Whether he joins the light or dark side of the force, he’s bound to hit it out of the park.
Star Wars: Episode VII is set to land on December 18, 2015.
So Gary, who else is on that shortlist?
