It’s not a bird. It’s not a plane. It’s not a man. It’s Supergirl! The first look at the all new Supergirl TV series is fresh, kind of funny and all girl power!
At a lazy six and a half minutes, it’s a little more than a trailer, but it gives us a pretty decent insight in to the series – the entire series. Superman’s less famous cousin Kara Danvers (or Kara Zor-El as she was known on Krypton) is 24, working in the city, and ready to become who she was meant to be. Her Kryptonian powers have never really been explored but after a desperate heroic attempt to save her sister from a plane crash, her Super-ness becomes her destiny.
Melissa Benoist, perhaps best known so far for her stint as Marley Rose on the all-singing all-dancing Glee, will be Supergirl in the new DC Comic series. Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, is back in the office, this time playing the bossy Cat Grant. Others to star in the series include Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood and Chyler Leigh.
DC is pushing their end really hard and it this one might just pay off. Supergirl’s story is finally being told in-depth; given there are few cheese-filled lines that make you squirm a little, but there are also a lot of punchy one-liners that are peaking our curiosity.
Some people are questioning the light-heartedness of the series in comparison to other successful superhero franchises, however it is hard to imagine a gritty Supergirl when the story is so similar to ones we have heard before. Perhaps the series will find darker roots as it moves on, but for now we’re excited – bring on Supergirl.
Late last year, it was rumoured that the Supergirl series would play in to the shared universe of Arrow and The Flash, all under the CBS wing, but there are yet to be any confirmations.
Supergirl hits earthly screens November 2015.
