Say hello to Benedict Cumberbatch. Don’t know him? Cumberbatch recently rose to fame as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock and has since starred in blockbusters such as Star Trek Into Darkness and The Fifth Estate as Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
Cumberbatch is 37 years old, 184 centimeters tall and honestly… a bit goofy looking. But this sullen looking face has just been named by Empire Magazine as the sexiest movie star of 2013, as voted by 50 000 unique readers. Surprised? Bet you aren’t the only one. Cumberbatch’s gaunt face topped with a tousled mop hairdo and awkward smile beat out heartthrobs Orlando Bloom, Henry Cavill and even Ryan Gosling.
It appears that Hollywood is slowly moving away from what was long considered to be sexy. For years, traditionally good-looking actors were lusted over by women all around the world. Example: Brad Pitt. Pitt’s sun-kissed locks, neatly trimmed beard and boyish smile won over women everywhere. Why? The formula just works. For the last 30 years there have been hundreds of “Brad Pitts” gracing the top of hottest lists all around the world. Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, Jude Law, the list goes on, each interchangeable for each other.
Cumberbatch is not the only eccentric actor women have suddenly gotten hot under the collar for. Also included in the top 50 of this year’s list is Cumberbatch’s Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, English actor Alan Rickman and at a startling number two on the list, comic book movie regular Tom Hiddleston.
So what makes men like Cumberbatch so hot? Clearly our preconceived notions of what is classically good looking are changing. It seems that being defined as “sexy” is no longer restricted to exterior appearances. Whilst men like Cumberbatch and Freeman don’t fit the usual formula, no one can deny that they hold themselves with certain stature, grace and integrity. Roles like Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes or Rickman’s role as Severus Snape are already regarded as classic and timeless depictions and had a huge influence in the success of the TV show and movie respectively. And let’s face it, who doesn’t find success attractive?
And so we are left with a dilemma: Is what’s considered sexy really changing or has the recent up rise in geek culture integrated itself into the mainstream? This question will continue to intensify with each new goofy actor taking Hollywood by storm. Whichever the case, it might not be too long until we see Rebel Wilson topping FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women list.
